Day 227 – Not The Melbourne Express

I often wondered about the MX paper, it’s just given out for free at train stations in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane’s CBDs. I had wondered who owns it, what mind is influencing every public transport user in Australia’s 3 largest cities. Anyway I eventually googled it today and as it turns out it is owned by News Limited, who are a company under News Crop, the world’s third largest media conglomerate, owned by Rupert Murdoch. News Corps list of assets is huge and includes: Fox TV, Fox Studios, Foxtel (Australia), National Geographic Channel, Sky TV, MySpace, Donna Hay Magazine, The Wall Street Journal and HarperCollins Publishing, as well as most of the print newspapers in the UK and Australia. There has been much speculation about Murdoch’s close friendship with a number of world politicians from Margaret Tatcher to Tony Blair to Barack Obama and whether his backing of them has led to their success in respective elections or whether he changes his backing based on a prediction on who will eventually win.

His children have similarly interesting lives, oldest son Lachlan owns a team in the Indian Premier League and counts Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and Baz Lurhman amongst his friends. James is heavily involved with his fathers News Corp company as well as being a non-executive director at GlaxoSmithKline and is closely associated with British PM David Cameron. His wife Kathryn works for a charity set up by former US President Bill Clinton. Another interesting report was his storming into the offices of The Independent newspaper in the UK with associate Rebekah Brooks to complain about an ad that stated ‘Rupert Murdoch won’t decide this election-you will’. Daughter Elisabeth is a film and tv producer married for a second time to Matthew Freud, who’s sister married Earl Spencer, brother of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Anyway that’s enough random facts from the word of Rupert Murdoch for one day! Who knows whether its all suspicion and innuendo, he does however support the Liberal party in Australia and its one reason why I’m glad Labour won, no one should have that much power.

Quote of the day: “When I was sixteen, I went to work for a newspaper in Hong Kong. It was a rag, but the editor taught me one important lesson. The key to a great story is not who, or what, or when, but why” – Elliot Carver ‘The World Is Not Enough’

Edited: Weird I wrote this and then the big controversary about Sarah Murdoch started and I hadn’t even mentioned her!
