Day 78 – But a breath

While Europe struggles through a haze of volcanic ash, the biggest story in Australia today was the death, in a maximum security prison, of gangland killer Carl Williams. The media certainly played this up as much as they could, trying to find conspiracies of corruption which could well exist. After all how could someone who is in almost constant solitary confinement, with his every movements watched, be bashed to death? Had it any relevance to the story that broke in the Sun Herald that morning, and what do they have to answer for?

Of course its timely to remember that Williams himself was in prison for 4 separate murders as well as numerous drug charges, but what shocks me if the lack of regard these gangsters have for human life. Maybe they all believe in reincarnation I don’t know, for their sake I hope so, but realistically its unlikely. They murder without pause and must know there will be retaliation on the way, before long, like the situation in Limerick, they will all be in jail or dead. A long bloody list of family and associates, all with wasted lives.

I mean what do they think life is about? Risking it all to be able to have money and drive fast cars? Some of these guys (and girls) will never again see a sunrise, or sunset, sip on a coffee and watch the world go by, have a beer in the sunshine and make friends, or fall in love. Their children will grow up without parents and relations, and have a constant reminder of it at all the significant events of their lives. No mum to shed a tear at graduation, no dad to walk them down the aisle. Really is it worth it? I don’t know what it’s like to have that much money but I can’t imagine it is.

I guess when one is in that cycle of violence it must be hard to break away from it, but there is so much else to life, and in the end, the thoughts of anger and revenge only bring harm to yourself and those around you. We’d all gain for remembering that on a smaller, more personal level too. The principle is the principle, whether it be on the scale of gangland warfare or a personal feud. We’d all be better off trying to get along.

Quote of the day – William Shakespeare

“And this our life, exempt from public haunt,
Finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks,
Sermons in stones, and good in everything”
