Day 72 – Such Is Life

During the course of our Visual Communications lecture today, while being educated about the Australian film industry, we came across the last words of Ned Kelly, ‘such is life’. What an objective and probably philosophical attitude from someone who was just about to be hanged. Yes he may have done terrible things in his life but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t admire his last quote.

Some days you can feel you reached so far down you need a phrase like ‘such is life’, but then it somehow releases you from whatever it was that made you feel so bad. I was more reflective than usual today, some days we just saunter through life in a monotonous soliloquay, isn’t it better to just feel? I was glad today I felt pain because it gave me an opportunity to reflect on life and almost bottle it up (hence the picture!) to be used in the future in a positive way.

I suppose trying to write about Frued, Jung and projection has influenced my thinking, and even though I’m not at all sure about some of their psychoanalytical theories, projection definitely has something to it. Part of it is how we project our feelings onto other people, that is a part of the theory of ‘we hate in others what we hate in ourselves’, and another part of it is the funny phenomenon this culture has of expecting others to make us happy, when really what we see in others is ourselves, therefore placing our lives in our own hands. It has also some link to the ‘act like you want to be treated’ theory but I’ve too much college work to do to look into it for now!

Here’s a poem from Amelia Earhart that I saw today, not exactly relevant, just nice!

Courage is the price that

Life exacts for granting peace.

The soul that knows it not

Knows no release from little things:

Knows not the livid loneliness of fear,

Nor mountain heights where bitter joy can hear the sound of wings.

Nor can life grant us boon of living, compensate

For dull gray ugliness and pregnant hate

Unless we dare

The soul’s dominion.

Each time we make a choice, we pay

With courage to behold the resistless day,

And count it fair.
